Why Did Jesus Have His Prayers Answered?

Why did Jesus have his prayers answered?  When you first hear that it may seem like it’s an odd or even awkward question. And, your first thought my be, “It was because he was Jesus.”

Let’s take a moment to really look to see if the Word of God gives reason for why Jesus’ prayers were answered and if it does, let’s learn from it.

Let’s start with Hebrews Chapter 5. This chapter deals with Jesus as High Priest, “appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God.” (See Hebrews 5:1)

Now let’s look at verse 7.

Hebrews 5:7 English Standard Version
“In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.”

When Jesus prayed, he was heard because of his reverence.

Does how we live our life before God matter? Does how we approach God in prayer matter? Yes.

Jesus was heard because of his reverence.

I want to share Hebrews 5:7 with you from the Amplified Bible.
“He was heard because of His reverent submission toward God [His sinlessness and His unfailing determination to do the Father’s will].”

Let’s go back and look at one of our main texts regarding prayer.

1 John 5:14-15 ESV
14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

Let’s also look at why Jesus said he came.
John 6:38 ESV
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.

Jesus’ life purpose was to do the will of the Father.  What he prayed for was the will of the Father to be done.

Jesus lived a life or reverence and submission towards the Father. Some translations say godly fear but that’s a little hard for us to understand. It’s more about respect, honor and being in awe of the Father.

We see this same word “reverence” in Hebrews 12:28.

Hebrews 12:28 World English Bible
“Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,”

How we live is to be a life of service with reverence and awe of our good God.

This is how to live a life of faith.  We look to the truth of Scripture. We believe who God is revealed to be. We believe His Will as revealed in his Word. We yield to it and act on it because his will is our mission.
