Download MP3Summary:
Jesus said we live by the Word of God. We live according to the Word so that we can experience the life that comes through the Word.
Jesus said we live by the Word of God. We live according to the Word so that we can experience the life that comes through the Word.
Scriptures:
Matthew 4:4 But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’” (Deut 8:3)
John 6:63 World English Bible
It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
Hebrews 4:12 World English Bible
For the word of God is living and active…
Psalm 138:2 WEB
I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your Name for your loving kindness and for your truth; for you have exalted your Name and your Word above all.
1 Thessalonians 2:13
For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.
Now let’s look at Joshua 1:8 again.
Joshua 1:8 World English Bible
8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.
What does not depart from your mouth mean?
Deuteronomy 30:14 World English Bible
But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.
Where does the Word need to be? In our hearts and in our mouths, or on our lips.
Let’s go to the New Testament
Romans 10 WEB
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth, and in your heart;”Deuteronomy 30:14 that is, the word of faith which we preach: What word is to be in our mouths and heart? The Word of Faith! What Words produce faith? The Word of God. 17 So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
9 that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.
So we are seeing it’s important to keep the Word of God in our mouth, on our lips, keep speaking it.
Let’s look at something really interesting
Isaiah 6 ESV
1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train[a] of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”[b]
4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
Why would a man have unclean lips?
Matthew 15:11 World English Bible
11 That which enters into the mouth doesn’t defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
What comes out of a man’s mouth? What kind of words can defile a person or make them unclean?
1 Peter 3:10 English Standard Version
10 For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;
The Evil Report
Numbers 13 WEB
27 They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there. 29 Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan.” 30 Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let’s go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!” 31 But the men who went up with him said, “We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.” 32 They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.
We can have unclean lips and an evil report if we speak things that contradict the Word, or we can speak words of life.
John 6:63 English Standard Version
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
Our the Word Jesus spoke spirit and life? If we speak his Word, are we speaking life? Yes.
Revelation 12:11 World English Bible
11 They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death.
Hebrews 10:23 World English Bible
23 let’s hold fast the confession (agreement) of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.
Hope is a confident expectation based on the Word. Just like faith, it’s for something you don’t yet see but you believe you will.
1 Timothy 4:8 World English Bible
8 For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now, and of that which is to come.
Psalm 27:13-14
New International Version
13 I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.
