The Healing of the Leper Part 2
Download MP3Jesus had great compassion for the leper who came to him for healing. He has great compassion for us too.
Healing of The Leper Part 2
We are looking at the true account of Jesus healing a leper.
Matthew 8:1-4
1 When he came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. 2 Behold, a leper came to him and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.” 3 Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be made clean.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 Jesus said to him, “See that you tell nobody; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
Matthew 8:3 from the AMPC reads that Jesus said, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
Points:
- The attitude of the leper was one of humbleness and reverence. He came and kneeled before Jesus. Luke said he even fell on his face before Jesus. This was an act of submission, of reverence and even worship. Did the leper get healed? Yes. Would it be wise to follow his example of being humble before God and worshiping Him when we come with our request? I also want you to hear Hebrews 5:7 “In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.” Jesus is our example. Jesus showed reverence when praying to the Father. So should we.
- What will keep up from being humble and having reverence towards God? Pride. Pride will hinder our prayer life and our walk with Christ. James 4:6 “But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
- Mark 1:41 says, “And being moved with compassion, he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou made clean.” Why does the Scripture include the fact that Jesus was moved with compassion? It is because we are to believe Jesus is full of compassion. Dictionary.com gives this definition of compassion, “a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.” Does this describe our Jesus? Yes! Yes it does!
- All three accounts record that Jesus touched him and the leper was healed. Healing in this account was ministered by touch and word. He touched him and said be clean. We see in other accounts of healing being ministered by touch and others by word. This account shows touch and spoken work can also work together.
Summary:
The man who had what others considered to be a hopeless situation, he had leprosy, came to Jesus worshiping him and with a humble heart. He knew Jesus could heal but shared with Jesus his uncertainty if Jesus was willing. Jesus said, “I will” and he healed the man. This answers the question, “Is God willing to heal me?” The answer is yes! In fact, healing has already been provided as we see in 1 Peter 2:24, “by his stripes you were healed.” Jesus is moved with compassion. He has sympathy and desires to alleviate our suffering. We can trust Him!
