The Hebrew word translated here as health is also translate as healing, cure, remedy. It has the meaning as active medicine for our bodies.
The Scripture says God’s Word is life and health to us. It's like a cure, like a remedy, like a medicine to us.
But to who is the Word of God like a medicine too?
Those who find his Words!
The word translated as "find" in the Hebrew also carries the meaning to acquire or receive.
If I say I found a dollar, that means I saw it and took possession of it. This is what the Scripture is talking about.
We find the Word, not in the since that, “Oh look, here’s what this verse says.” It means, “This is what the Scripture says and I accept and take hold of that truth and not it’s mine.”
Here’s a coupe of Scriptures where that same word translated in Proverbs 4 as "find" is used.
"But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord." - Genesis 6:8
Noah found, experienced God’s grace. God’s grace was shown and given to Noah.
"And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold." - Genesis 26:12 ESV
Find as used in Proverbs Chapter 4 isn’t talking about finding in the sense of just locating something. It’s finding as taking hold of for yourself.
His Word is true. We we realize that and honor his Word as the Word of God and we take hold of it for ourselves, attending to it, keeping it in our hearts and in front of our eyes, meaning we are always thinking about the Word and how it’s true for us, that’s when it becomes life and health to us. That’s when it becomes like a cure, a remedy to our bodies.
1 Thessalonians 2:13
And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
Don’t just read the Word of God. Don’t just listen to it. Keep your focus on it.
Keep it in your heart.
What do you keep in your heart? Those things that you cherish.
This is finding the Word. This is when it becomes life and health to you.
